Is Google's AI Lying About Your Business Right Now? Here's How to Check
Is Google's AI lying about your business?
Google's AI now scans your website, your reviews, and your competitors to fill in gaps on your Google Business Profile automatically, and it doesn't always get it right. Check your services list, primary category, business description, recent reviews, and website consistency today. A mismatch in any of these can get you skipped entirely when Google's AI recommends businesses to searchers. Download the free 5 minute check now.
If you haven't logged into your Google Business Profile in the last few weeks, there's a real chance it's telling potential customers something about your business that isn't true. Not because you did anything wrong. Because Google's AI did it for you.
What Changed: Google Is Now Editing Your Profile Without Asking
Google's AI has always used your Google Business Profile to decide who shows up for local searches. What's different in 2026 is that Google's AI is no longer just reading your profile. It's writing parts of it.
How This Actually Works
When Google's AI finds gaps in your profile, missing services, a thin description, categories that don't quite match what you do, it fills those gaps in itself. It pulls from your website, your reviews, and what your competitors have listed, then makes its best guess about what belongs on your profile.
Most of the time that guess is close enough. Sometimes it isn't. A remodeling contractor who does kitchens and bathrooms might suddenly show up listing "flooring installation" because a review mentioned it once. A real estate agent who works exclusively with buyers might get tagged under a category built for commercial brokers. Neither business owner touched their profile. Google's AI made the call for them.
Why Most Business Owners Have No Idea This Is Happening
Nobody checks a listing that's already "done." You set up your GBP once, maybe touched it again when you got a new phone number, and moved on. Google's AI doesn't work on that timeline. It's re-evaluating your profile continuously, and every edit it makes happens quietly, with no notification telling you something changed.
That's the part that should actually concern you. You could be losing calls right now to a mismatch you don't know exists.
The 5 Things to Check Right Now
This takes about five minutes. Run through all five before you do anything else with your marketing this week.
1. Your Services List
Open your Google Business Profile and go to Services. Compare what's listed against what you actually do. Google may have auto-added something you don't offer, which wastes your time on calls you'll have to turn away, or dropped something you specialize in, which means you're invisible for the exact searches you want to win. Delete what doesn't match your business. Add what's missing.
2. Your Primary Category
Your category is the single biggest signal Google's AI uses to match you to a search. A generic or slightly-off category, even one Google assigned automatically, quietly limits which searches you show up for at all. Confirm it's the most specific, accurate description of what you do.
3. Your Business Description
This field carries more weight than most owners realize, because it's one of the main places Google's AI reads to answer customer questions about you directly. A vague description ("family owned business serving the area since 2010") gives the AI nothing specific to work with. A strong one states exactly what you do, the services you specialize in, and where you do them.
4. Your Last 10 Reviews
Skim your recent reviews for anything factually outdated: old hours, a service you no longer offer, the wrong location. Respond publicly and correct it. Google's AI treats review text as real information about your business, not just customer opinion, so bad information sitting in a review can end up shaping how AI describes you.
5. Website and Profile Consistency
Your business name, hours, services, and service area need to say the same thing on your website and on your profile. Any mismatch signals "unreliable" to Google's AI, and unreliable businesses get quietly filtered out of AI-generated recommendations, even when they're the right fit for the search.

What Happens When You Actually Fix This
This isn't theoretical. When we rebuilt a paving contractor's Google Business Profile from scratch, claiming it, verifying every category, writing a complete keyword-rich description, and uploading real project photos, the business went from a Wix template nobody could find to ranking #1 for every major keyword in their market within 60 days. Within 90 days, they were being cited by every major AI platform for paving searches in their area. That contractor now gets 12 or more organic inbound calls a day, on top of the referral calls they were already getting.
The difference wasn't better work. They were already good at their trade. The difference was that Google's AI finally had accurate, complete information to work with instead of gaps it had to guess at.
How to Fix What You Find
Once you know what's wrong, most of the fixes take minutes: updating a service, rewriting a description, responding to a review. If your profile needs a deeper rebuild, complete category audit, full description rewrite, ongoing review management, that's exactly what we handle for local service businesses through our Google Business Profile management service, as part of a broader SEO and AEO strategy built to get you found and cited by AI, not just ranked on a page most people don't read anymore.
FAQ
Does Google still have a Q&A section on Business Profiles?
No. Google removed the public Q&A feature from Business Profiles in late 2025. Customer questions are now answered by Google's AI directly, pulling from your description, website, and reviews instead.
How often should I check my Google Business Profile for AI errors?
Once a month at minimum, and immediately after any major change to your services or business name. Google's AI re-evaluates profiles continuously, so a clean check today doesn't guarantee a clean profile in six weeks.
Can I stop Google's AI from editing my profile?
Not entirely. What you can control is how much room you leave for it to guess. A complete, accurate, specific profile gives Google's AI far less to fill in on its own.
Does this affect small businesses, or just larger companies?
It affects every business with a Google Business Profile, regardless of size. If anything, smaller businesses with less complete profiles are more likely to have gaps that Google's AI ends up filling in incorrectly.
How long does it take to fix issues once I find them?
Most of the five checks above take a few minutes each to fix yourself. A full profile rebuild, if your business needs one, typically takes our team one to two weeks to complete properly.
