Angi Alternative: EMG vs Angi Leads and HomeAdvisor

Angi sends you homeowners who are also hearing from other pros, and you pay for every lead whether you win the job or not. EMG builds your own website, Google presence, and content, so homeowners find you and call you, and nobody else gets the same lead.

What is the main difference between Angi and EMG?

Angi sells shared leads. Each homeowner request goes to up to 4 or 5 pros, according to Angi's own help center, and pros pay for each lead whether or not they win the job. EMG builds your website, Google Business Profile, search rankings, and content so homeowners find and call you directly, and every lead is yours alone.

How it works

How do Angi Leads and HomeAdvisor work?

HomeAdvisor's pro product is now Angi Leads, according to HomeAdvisor's own help pages. Angi is a home services marketplace with about 111,000 active pros a month, per its latest annual report.

Pros set a monthly budget and are charged for each lead as soon as it is sent, whether or not they get the job. Angi's annual report confirms this. Prices vary by task, location, and how the homeowner asked for quotes, and pros only see them after logging in. Angi does not publish standard prices, so the commonly quoted $15 to $85 per lead comes from contractors.

Leads are shared. Angi's help center says each customer is connected with up to 4 service pros on one page, and no more than 5 on another.

The trade-offs

Why do contractors look for an Angi alternative?

We talk to contractors every week who are stuck on lead platforms. The reasons are almost always the same.

Speed

It is a race to make the call

The same homeowner hears from several pros. If you are not first, and not the cheapest, they move on to one of the other contractors in their voicemail.

Price

It is a race to the bottom

When four or five pros bid on the same job, price becomes the deciding factor. That pressure lands directly on your margins.

Cost

You end up paying twice

To win the race, many contractors hire callers to respond instantly. Now they pay for the lead and for the person chasing it.

Incentives

More leads, not better leads

Platforms earn more when they send more leads. In 2023 the FTC ordered HomeAdvisor to pay up to $7.2 million over allegedly misleading claims about lead quality.

Source: FTC press release, January 23, 2023.

"I talk to a lot of contractors that hire callers to respond to these leads instantly, and now they are paying twice to convert that lead: the lead and the caller. It becomes very expensive, and it is a model that is hard to break away from when you are entirely dependent on it."
Harrison Smith, founder of Evolution Media Group

Being fair

When is Angi the right choice?

Angi is not a bad option for everyone. For some businesses, at some stages, it is the right one.

You are brand new and need jobs this month

A new business with no website, reviews, or rankings can use Angi to get first jobs and first reviews, as long as someone can reply within minutes.

You need to fill a slow season or test an area

Short-term lead buying can fill capacity gaps or test demand in a new service area before you invest in owned marketing there.

The honest trade-off

If you cannot spend time building your own system right now, staying on Angi keeps work coming. Building takes some time, so many contractors do both for a while. As Harrison puts it: "Buying leads keeps you busy right now. Building your own system keeps you busy forever."

The EMG difference

What does EMG do differently for contractors?

We build a lead generation system that covers every place homeowners look, so you are the most visible local option and win more jobs without spending more on leads.

Your website

A fast site with a page for every service and every town you work in, built to rank and to turn visitors into calls.

Google Business Profile

Fully built out, posted to weekly, and fed with reviews so you win the map pack where most local calls start.

Google search

SEO that ranks you for the exact services homeowners search, in the towns you actually want to work.

AI answer engines

AEO so tools like ChatGPT and Google's AI Overviews recommend your business when homeowners ask who to hire.

Social media

Before and after posts, job site clips, and short videos that make you the familiar name in town.

YouTube

Project walkthroughs and answers to common questions that sell your expertise before you arrive.

Strategy built for your business

We start with your market, your margins, and your goals, then decide which channels to build first. No packaged campaign copied from the last client.

Leads that are yours alone

Every call, form, and message comes to you because someone found you. No other business gets the same lead, so you compete on trust, not on who dials fastest.

Results

What happens when you own your lead flow?

Here is what owned lead flow has done for contractors and home services companies we work with.

$250K a monthin revenue within 4 months for a home services company, with no paid ads
12 calls a dayfor a paving contractor who reached #1 in his market in 60 days
2 weeksfrom launch to the first job booked from social media for a new home services business

Making the switch

How do you get off Angi without losing jobs?

You do not have to quit cold turkey. Most of our clients run both for a while, then shift spend as their own system takes over.

  1. Keep your current leads runningDo not turn off work you need. Keep buying while we build.
  2. Build the foundationGoogle Business Profile, website service and town pages, and review requests go live first.
  3. Track cost per booked jobCompare what an Angi job really costs after lost bids with what your own leads cost. Our calculator does the math.
  4. Cut back as your own calls growWhen your own leads cover your schedule, lower your Angi budget. Every job you replace is a job with no lead fee.

Cost

What does EMG cost compared with Angi?

Angi charges for every lead, and you compete for each one. EMG is a flat monthly fee, and every lead is exclusive.

Here is an example. Forty Angi leads a month at $60 each is $2,400 a month, and every one of those homeowners is also talking to other pros. Google Business Profile ($497) plus SEO and AEO ($1,497) is $1,795 a month with the 10 percent two-service bundle discount, and every call that comes from it is yours alone. Results depend on your trade and market, and owned marketing takes time to ramp.

Every EMG service is month to month with a 60-day notice to cancel. Bundles of 2, 3, or 4 or more monthly services save 10, 15, or 20 percent. Ad spend, if you run ads, is paid directly to Google or Meta.
