Compare
Lead platforms and agencies all promise more business. They are built very differently, and the differences decide what you pay, who you compete with, and what you own when you stop paying. Here is an honest look at how Evolution Media Group compares, including when the other option is the better fit.
Buying leads means paying a platform like Zillow, Angi, or Thumbtack for each lead or closing, often for leads shared with other businesses. Owning your lead flow means building your own website, Google Business Profile, search rankings, and content so customers find you directly. Bought leads stop when you stop paying. Owned lead flow keeps producing and gets cheaper per lead over time.

Most lead platforms are built on the same model. Here is how it compares with building your own system.
| Renting leads from a platform | Owning your lead flow | |
|---|---|---|
| Who else gets the lead | Often several competitors at once | Nobody. The customer chose you. |
| How the platform earns | Per lead or per closing, so more leads means more revenue for them | A flat fee for building and running your system |
| What you compete on | Who calls first and who quotes lowest | Reviews, reputation, and trust |
| Cost over time | Stays the same or rises as more businesses join | Falls per lead as rankings and reviews build |
| When you stop paying | Leads stop the same day | Rankings, reviews, and content keep working |
| Speed to first lead | Fast, often the same week | Weeks for Google Business Profile and ads, months for SEO |
Why owners leave
We talk with contractors and agents every week who want off the platforms. Their reasons line up almost perfectly.
Per-lead prices, memberships, and referral fees add up, and every lead you do not win still costs money.
The same customer hears from several businesses. If you are not first, they move on, so many owners pay callers to respond instantly and end up paying twice for every lead.
When several businesses bid on the same job, the cheapest quote often wins, and your margin pays for it.
Platforms paid per lead earn more by sending more leads. For agents, referral fee programs take a large share of the commission after the agent does the conversion work.
"Those platforms are not there to help your business. They spend heavily on ads to capture leads at any cost, because they can sell the same lead to many businesses."
Harrison Smith, founder of Evolution Media Group
Being fair
Lead platforms solve a real problem: work right now. Building your own system takes time.
If your schedule is empty and you cannot wait for owned marketing to ramp up, platforms can fill the gap.
Owning your lead flow takes some of your input up front. If you truly cannot give it, staying on platforms is a reasonable choice.
Short-term lead buying can show whether demand exists before you invest in owned marketing there.
Most owners do both for a while: keep buying leads while their own system ramps up, then cut back as owned leads take over. As Harrison puts it: "Buying leads keeps you busy right now. Building your own system keeps you busy forever."
Speed to lead
When a lead goes to several businesses, the first to respond has a big advantage. The research has been consistent for years.
The MIT and InsideSales Lead Response Management study found that calling within 5 minutes instead of 30 raised the odds of reaching a lead about 100 times, and the odds of qualifying it about 21 times.

Harvard Business Review reported that firms contacting a lead within an hour were nearly 7 times as likely to qualify it as firms that waited longer, yet the average response time among companies audited was 42 hours.

They can be, for businesses that need work right away and can respond within minutes. They get expensive for businesses that depend on them long term, because leads are often shared, prices rise as more businesses join, and nothing builds up that you keep.
An exclusive lead goes to only one business. Some platforms sell exclusive leads, but you still pay for each one. Leads from your own website, Google profile, and content are both exclusive and owned, so they cost nothing extra once your system is built.
It depends on your market and starting point. A complete Google Business Profile and ads can produce leads within weeks. SEO and AEO usually take several months, then keep producing without a per-lead cost. Most owners run both during the transition.
