A hook is the opening line of a video, reel, or post, the first words or on-screen text a viewer sees. A strong hook calls out the viewer, names a problem they already feel, or challenges something they believe, so they stop scrolling to hear the rest. Weak hooks announce a topic or promise generic value.

What works
After writing hooks for our own media network and dozens of local businesses, the pattern is consistent. The best hooks do one of three things in the first eight words.
"You're probably picking the cheapest bid without realizing it." The viewer sees themselves in the first line and keeps watching to find out why.
"This is the real reason you still don't have a roof that lasts." It speaks to a frustration they carry, not a topic you want to cover.
"Everybody gets this wrong about roof replacement costs." A flat, confident claim makes people stop to see if you are right.
Read your first eight words. If they announce a topic ("Today we are talking about roofing costs") or promise generic value ("Here are some great tips"), rewrite them. If they implicate the viewer with a clear, unhedged claim, you have a hook.
Hook styles
Using the same kind of hook every day trains people to scroll past you. Rotate through these styles across the week.
Opens a gap the viewer needs closed. "Wait until you see what buying cheap really costs."
Names exactly who should watch. "Homeowners in Portland, listen carefully."
Tells them what not to do. "Don't ever sign a roofing contract without this."
Promises a short, specific list. "The 3 reasons your ads aren't working."
Feels like a secret. "This feels illegal to know about roof replacement costs."
Pushes against common advice. "You've been thinking about this wrong the whole time."
Opens with a lesson learned. "I wish someone warned me about this before I started."
Names who they are and what is stuck. "If you're a homeowner still picking the cheapest bid, this is for you."
