Home / Compare / EMG vs HomeBuddy
Comparison
HomeBuddy sells home improvement leads and booked appointments, and says each one goes to a single contractor. That is a real improvement over shared leads. But an exclusive lead you rent is still not a lead you own. EMG builds the brand and visibility that bring homeowners to you directly.
HomeBuddy runs consumer ads, screens homeowners, and sells real-time leads or booked appointments to contractors, which it says go to a single contractor. You pay for each one, and the homeowner came through HomeBuddy's marketing. EMG builds your own website, Google presence, and content so homeowners find your business by name, with no per-lead or per-appointment charge.
At a glance
Exclusive and owned are not the same thing. Here is the difference.

How it works
HomeBuddy runs consumer advertising across many channels, screens homeowners with questionnaires, and sells the results to contractors as real-time leads or booked in-person appointments. It focuses on big-ticket trades such as roofing, windows, siding, bath remodels, HVAC, gutters, and generators.
HomeBuddy does not publish prices. Contractors set a budget and pay per lead or appointment as they are delivered, and appointments carry a handling fee. Industry coverage has described no upfront fees and no long-term contracts.
HomeBuddy says new leads and appointments go to a single contractor, with no shared or old leads. That is the company's own claim, and public contractor reviews are limited.

The trade-offs
Public contractor reviews of HomeBuddy are scarce, so treat any single review with care. These are the structural trade-offs of any pay-per-appointment model.
Even when a lead goes only to you, the homeowner found HomeBuddy, not your business. Next month you pay again for the next one.
Lead and appointment prices are set by the platform and can rise with demand. One reviewer reported lead costs doubling within a year.

Some homeowners report surprise at calls after filling out forms online, which can make the first conversation harder.

When appointments come from one outside source, your schedule depends on its prices and policies.
"Building your own marketing system takes some time. But buying leads keeps you busy right now, and building your own system keeps you busy forever."

Being fair
HomeBuddy is not a bad option for everyone. For some businesses, at some stages, it is the right one.
Big-ticket contractors with estimators who measure close rate by source can use exclusive, pre-set appointments profitably.
Appointment volume can keep crews busy in a new area while your own Google presence and rankings ramp up there.
If you need appointments now and do not have time to build, buying them is a fair choice. Many contractors run both until their own system covers the schedule. As Harrison puts it: "Buying leads keeps you busy right now. Building your own system keeps you busy forever."
The EMG difference
We build a lead generation system that covers every place homeowners look, so they find your business by name and you stop paying for every appointment.
A fast site with a page for every service and every town you work in, built to rank and to turn visitors into calls.
Fully built out, posted to weekly, and fed with reviews so you win the map pack where most local calls start.
SEO that ranks you for the exact services homeowners search, in the towns you actually want to work.
AEO so tools like ChatGPT and Google's AI Overviews recommend your business when homeowners ask who to hire.
Before and after posts, job site clips, and short videos that make you the familiar name in town.
Project walkthroughs and answers to common questions that sell your expertise before you arrive.
We start with your market, your margins, and your goals, then decide which channels to build first. No packaged campaign copied from the last client.
Every call, form, and message comes to you because someone found you. No other business gets the same lead, so you compete on trust, not on who dials fastest.

Here is what owned lead flow has done for contractors and home services companies we work with.
Making the switch
You do not have to quit cold turkey. Most of our clients run both for a while, then shift spend as their own system takes over.
HomeBuddy charges per lead or appointment, at prices it does not publish. EMG is a flat monthly fee.
Google Business Profile ($497) plus SEO and AEO ($1,497) is $1,795 a month with the 10 percent two-service bundle discount. Add ads management or media when you are ready, and save 15 percent on three services or 20 percent on four or more.
Every EMG service is month to month with a 60-day notice to cancel. Bundles of 2, 3, or 4 or more monthly services save 10, 15, or 20 percent. Ad spend, if you run ads, is paid directly to Google or Meta.
