Comparison
Thumbtack charges you for each lead, and the customer is usually reaching out to several pros at once. EMG builds your own visibility on Google, in AI answers, and on social, so customers find you, call you, and do not shop you against a list.
Thumbtack is a marketplace where you pay per lead with no subscription, and customers can contact several pros for the same job. EMG builds your website, Google Business Profile, search rankings, and content so customers come to you directly, with no per-lead charge and no competing bids on the same request.
At a glance
Thumbtack is quick to start. EMG is built to last.

How it works
Customers post a job or browse pros on Thumbtack, then contact the ones they like. Pros set a weekly budget and a maximum price per lead, and pay for each lead they receive. There is no subscription.
Thumbtack does not publish lead prices. Pros report anywhere from about $10 to more than $100 per lead, depending on the service, job size, and market.
A Thumbtack community moderator explained in July 2025 that leads are not sent to a fixed number of pros. Instead, customers can contact a limited number of pros within a set time frame, and may contact more after that.

The trade-offs
Pros on Thumbtack's own community forum raise the same concerns again and again.
Pros describe lead prices jumping sharply, sometimes above the value of small jobs, and one reported spending about $1,393 for maybe two jobs.

Pros report competitors replying within 22 seconds to 4 minutes. If you are on a job site, the lead is often gone.

Pros report paying for leads who never respond, with inconsistent results when they ask for credits.

When a platform earns per lead, its incentive is volume. Your incentive is jobs that close at a good margin. Those are not the same thing.
"Those platforms are paid per lead, so more leads is more money for them. The model is not designed to give the business owner good leads that close at a high rate. It is designed to send volume and leave the business owner to do the work of converting them."
Harrison Smith, founder of Evolution Media Group
Being fair
Thumbtack is not a bad option for everyone. For some businesses, at some stages, it is the right one.
Handyman work, cleaning, moving help, and similar services can work well on Thumbtack if a solo operator can reply within minutes.
A new business with no contract budget can use Thumbtack to land first jobs and build some early reviews.
If you need jobs this week and have no time to build, Thumbtack keeps work coming. Owning your leads takes time to build, so many pros run both until their own leads take over. As Harrison puts it: "Buying leads keeps you busy right now. Building your own system keeps you busy forever."
The EMG difference
We build a lead generation system that covers every place customers look, so you are the most visible local option and customers call you instead of comparing a list.
A fast site with a page for every service and every town you work in, built to rank and to turn visitors into calls.
Fully built out, posted to weekly, and fed with reviews so you win the map pack where most local calls start.
SEO that ranks you for the exact services homeowners search, in the towns you actually want to work.
AEO so tools like ChatGPT and Google's AI Overviews recommend your business when homeowners ask who to hire.
Before and after posts, job site clips, and short videos that make you the familiar name in town.
Project walkthroughs and answers to common questions that sell your expertise before you arrive.
We start with your market, your margins, and your goals, then decide which channels to build first. No packaged campaign copied from the last client.
Every call, form, and message comes to you because someone found you. No other business gets the same lead, so you compete on trust, not on who dials fastest.
Results
Here is what owned lead flow has done for contractors and home services companies we work with.
Making the switch
You do not have to quit cold turkey. Most of our clients run both for a while, then shift spend as their own system takes over.
Thumbtack charges per lead with no contract. EMG charges a flat monthly fee with no contract, and every lead is exclusive.
Google Business Profile management starts at $497 a month and is often the fastest way to start getting your own calls. Pair it with SEO and AEO ($1,497) for $1,795 a month with the 10 percent two-service bundle discount.
Every EMG service is month to month with a 60-day notice to cancel. Bundles of 2, 3, or 4 or more monthly services save 10, 15, or 20 percent. Ad spend, if you run ads, is paid directly to Google or Meta.
